ADHD Management

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a lifelong, inherited behavioural condition which includes poor concentration, distractibility and restlessness. It is often associated with other psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety and addictions which can have a major impact on quality of life.

However, having ADHD is not necessarily just a negative thing as it is also commonly associated with personality traits and talents, which we value in our society. People with ADHD are often creative, lateral thinking, high energy, driven individuals, who can hyper-focus and entertain. They are often the leaders or “movers and shakers” who generate and value new ideas, who take risks and who drive us forward in our society. read more…

Depression Counselling

It is natural to feel unhappy or sad at times, as it is a normal response to failure, loss or some form of life stress – this is not classed as depression.

There is a difference between these occasional feelings and the prolonged mental illness of depression that can interfere with a person’s everyday activities. Feeling hopeless and miserable on a consistent basis is not normal.

Classified as a mood disorder, depression can be described as feelings of sadness, loss, or anger that affects the entire mind and body. As such it is difficult for an individual to lift themselves out of this depressive state and should be treated as a serious medical condition. read more…

Diabetes

A disorder of metabolism, diabetes is a complex group of diseases with a variety of causes. People with the condition have high blood glucose which is also called high blood sugar or hyperglycaemia.

Essentially diabetes effects the way the body uses digested food for energy. The digestive tract breaks down carbohydrates, sugars and starches present in food into glucose, a form of sugar. This glucose then enters the bloodstream and with the help of the hormone insulin, cells throughout the body can then absorb glucose and use it for energy.read more…

Low Level Laser Therapy

Injury and overuse can mean time away from exercise or daily activity, pain and frustration.
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is an effective, drug free alternative for treating these conditions.
LLLT targets the underlying problem, as well as the symptoms, resulting in sustained benefits.

Dr Juliet Froomes encourages patients, to be as active as they can but if injury occurs she has a special interest in the use of Low Level Laser Therapy to treat musculoskeletal problems and pain. You can download an information sheet here or read below for more detail.read more…

Shingrix Vaccine – Immunisation Program

Now included in the government immunisation program, the Shingrix vaccination offers a layer of protection against shingles, as currently there is no cure.

Shingrix recommended as a two-dose (2 – 6 months apart) primary course for the following eligible groups:

  • Adults aged 65 and over
  • Immunocompromised adults 18 years and over
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 50 years and over

Patients who have previously received Zostavax free under NIP cannot receive free Shingrix until at least 5 years after the Zostavax dose.

Patients who have previously received Zostavax privately are eligible to receive Shingrix free under NIP. An interval of at least 12 months is recommended between paid Zostavax and free Shingrix.

Unfortunately, the initial supply of Shingrix is very limited. More vaccines will be available in the coming months.

Immunocompromised patients would be prioritized for Shingrix injections.

Please call One Point Medical to speak with the practice nurse if you have any queries or view the website for more information regarding the shingles vaccine.
